Is your iPad causing your insomnia?

by Dave from Paleohacks
(creator of the Paleohacks Cookbook)

Do you leave your computer, tablet or TV switched on in the bedroom, as you drift off to sleep each night? Millions of people do, without understanding the dramatic health consequences.

Yet, they all do something which causes harm in humans. The blue light they emit impairs restful sleep. How? Exposure to blue light prevents the release of melatonin, which is an essential hormone associated with sleep.

Unfortunately, blue light not only suppresses the body making melatonin and sleeping. It’s considered to be “carcinogenic pollution” and a recent study on mice shows blue light correlating with higher cancer rates.

A lack of melatonin is linked to higher rates of breast, ovarian, and prostate cancers, while blocking blue rays with amber glasses is linked to lower cancer rates.

Not only is sleep impacted. It also negatively influences thermoregulation, the level of the body's blood pressure and your glucose homeostasis.

Blue light exposure may be playing a role in the higher incidence of cataracts and macular degeneration too often seen today.

How Sleep is Compromised
Ordinarily, the pineal gland, a pea-size organ in the brain, begins to release melatonin a couple of hours before your regular bedtime. The hormone is no sleeping pill, but it does reduce alertness, making sleep more inviting.

Light,. especially that of the blue variety, can keep the pineal gland from releasing melatonin, thus warding off sleepiness and stopping you nodding off.

You don’t have to be staring directly at a television or computer screen: If enough blue light hits the eye, even after being reflected around the room, the gland can stop releasing melatonin.

Exposure significantly impacts your own mood.

National Library of Medicine report

A recent study by the National Sleep Foundation, found that many Americans have long-term sleep deprivation. Only about a third of the population reported getting 8 hours of sleep a night, and 31% reported 6 hr or less. Sleep loss is common in modern society, with evidence showing that people are sleeping on average only 6.8 hours per night. Thats an hoiur and a half less than a century ago.

In Japan,  work exhaustion and sleep deprivation are often blamed for large number of deaths. Most cases of “karoshi”, or “death from overwork”, involve acute cardiovascular events.

Although the effects of sleep deprivation on the organs is as yet unproven, recent studies reveal string relationships between sleep deprivation and hypertension (HT), coronary heart disease (CHD), and diabetes mellitus (DM).

The full resport can be read in the National Library of Medicine, HERE.

In Summer 2022, the French National Institute of Mediciane suggested that sleeping well could avert 70% of heart disease. "As cardiovascular disease is the top cause of death worldwide, greater awareness is needed on the importance of good sleep for maintaining a healthy heart," said lead scientist Dr Nambiema of the French Institute of Health and Medical Research.  A report by the European Society of Cardiology confirms this - you can read it free HERE.

What is Deep Sleep?

Deep Sleep is a Delta wave meditation set to a soundscape of calming music.

Delta waves are released when the brain is in a state of deep sleep (stage 4), when the body regenerates cells and tissue and produces hormones essential for growth and development.

Deep Sleep is designed to induce natural sleepiness and should be listened to up to an hour before going to sleep. By entraining the brain to release Delta waves around bedtime, you will experience deeper, more restorative sleep cycles.
